I discovered this KYOCERA R-651 at a Goodwill and fell in love with its minimalist face design and beautiful sound, but one of the original wood veneered side panels had a deep gouge in it and was beyond repair.
Not one to let beautiful design go to waste, I worked with my brother to create some new side panels for it. We chose African Padauk wood for its natural color and picked out a piece that had a slice of heartwood on one edge. Then my brother created a CNC pattern that mimics hand carvings and ran the wood through the CNC. I finished the panels off by countersinking the screw holes, hand sanding everything and adding a matte finish polyurethane.
